I got a sachet of scarlet Rit Dye off of ebay, poured some hot water over the powder and plonked in about ten sets of tweenies for about 15-20 minutes and I quite like the results: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]the first two are obviously the before and after stems and the third is a normal red medium stem for comparison. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]I only had a few sets to spare but I could have done loads more in the solution - this lot should last me a little while though. I've even ordered some more dyes and a shedload of the stems to get some in a few other colours lol. |

| Unfortunately I don't think they do. I used the whole sachet in this experiment - next one for the blue I'm only going to use a little bit, maybe a teaspoons worth, and see how they turn out. If that goes well I may try and recreate some of the old Alan Warriner/Jocky Wilson red white and blue ones lol. |

| I got some more colours - royal blue, scarlet, lemon yellow and kelly green - and did some sets with each of these, plus a couple of mixed colours. Not pleased with the red and blue combination - looks more black than purple - maybe next time I'll try a little less blue and a bit more red. Basic instructions - add a teaspoon of dye powder into a bowl/jug/whatever and fill with hot water. Add the stems and leave for 15-20 minutes. Here are the results so far (the top left are the original colour lol): [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]I also did some red white and blue ones which I'm quite pleased with: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]and on the Carreras with some Union Jack flights: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] |

| You can tell I'm not a business man - I ain't got a proper clue about the cost per stem lol.
My outlays, including postage, were:
Dye - £3.69 per colour Stems - £14.40 for 100 sets of natural colour tweenies (damned fine deal from Pure Darts)
I don't know how many sets I could do with each packet of dye, but I would guess 1 pack would do the 100 sets - maybe some more. The blue I've used around 3 teaspoons worth and there is still about half left - I've probably done around 30 sets with that colour so far but could have done loads more.
So at a guess if I was just going to do one colour it would be around 18 per set, 6p per stem.
The red white and blue ones would probably push that up to around 22p per set as there would be 2 dyes needed.
I can't remember who was after them, but someone wanted some of the old Jocky Wilson/Alan Warriner stems. These aren't the same, but they could be a cheap alternative given the rarity of the real things. |

| Well it is the fun of been creative and making your own that is the best part.
I wonder if you can put some string or very thin tape around the stems for a zig zag effect? |

| Not sure if string or tape would work - can't see any reason why it wouldn't though. Glue would probably work - glue a pattern on the stem and let it dry before adding the dye. Once the dye is dry then peel or chip off the glue. Can't see me trying it just yet though - I may make some more red white and blues though as I only did 3 sets of those lol. |
