| Larry's a great player and beats everyone at the bar, however he does just enough to win. He needs to be challenged by other players in his caliber. When playing lesser players, Larry plays down and only when they get close to beating him does he show his true form. He has a problem finding players that can challenge him. What he does to help challenge himself with lesser players to play 2 or 3 to 1. He always goes last when playing. Larry needs to stay true to playing his game and not worry who he is playing against. Thanks for listening, any help you could give Larry would be great.......... |

| Larry - listen to your better half - ignore who you are playing against and play the board. This is better for you and better for them in the long run.
One day you could be playing in a tournament or something and you come up against these lesser players in the first couple of rounds. You decide to play your B game against these guys and do just enough to win. Third round you could get matched against someone of equal ability as yourself, but your brain is now attuned to playing your B game, so that is what you do in round 3 and get walloped yourself.
Always, and I mean always, try to play to the best of your ability on the day and do not to ease up.

| Sounds like your playing the player not the board Larry ! Either that or you dont want to hurt peoples feelings by giving them a good kicking on the board . The old advice stands my friend , Play the board not the player , Not easy i know but you gotta do it ! |

| Some good advice above Larry so take heed.
Also try and have some more matches through the net like you did with Bov, I know its not the same as having the person with you but in your situation its the next best thing.
Now would be great if you could play George like that, why not ask him? |

| Something that's easy to say but difficult to put into practice! I know i don't always bring my A game to a match, and i do sometimes play poorly against weaker opposition...... but its certainly not for lack of effort. The thing is, you know in the back of your head that you should be beating these people easily so subconsciously you don't focus as well as you would against a top opponent. I think i'm finally turning the corner though and managing to find my A or B game most weeks, a few weeks back for instance i had 14 and 16 dart legs against a woman who was struggling to hit 30 or 40........ then last sunday at a comp i hit a 13 darter against another weak player! As Andy says, play the board Larry and it will happen |

To me this sounds like a lack of motivation when playing lesser players. If there’s anything that occupies high importance in sports, it is motivation. It is motivation that can make people realise unknown potential inside them, thus enhancing motivation forms a core which includes a change in attitude and development of a positive mindset. Having known Larry through the forums for a long time i know that he doesn`t lack self-confidence and that he has positive energy around him in terms of a supportive wife and a solid foundation of friends and family so the problem must lie elsewhere. Perhaps Larry needs to up his goals target. Setting up ambitious goals helps a lot in keeping a player in tune with his performance and requirements. To keep track of long-term goals, there should be appropriate acheivable medium-term goals too. However, it is the short-term goals that keep people focused on the most essential and foundational aspects that are needed for a superior performance. Goals should always be monitored and revised, for better performance, and remember to talk positively to yourself, an athlete’s powerful inner voice can work wonders in reinforcing self-esteem, thus positive self-talk does much to enhance motivation. It has been proven that such self-talk can positively alter an athlete’s belief in themselves and their sport. There are three types of self-talk. The first type, known as task-relevant self-talk, focusses on an athlete’s attention on the task that needs to be completed. The second type is known as mood-related self-talk and deals with an athlete’s feelings and moods. The third type, which is known as positive self-affirmation statement, consists of maintaining a high opinion on oneself and thus increasing motivation and confidence. |

| hey Larry, play me any time on the chat box.....well I say any time but from 7pm to 11pm UK time and I'm up for it.
One other thing. You MUST download n01....set it to a higher level than your self and play the machine.....get beaten up a few time by it...set it to level 9 and after getting beaten 10-0 or 9-1 try and improve.....set yourself a target of beating the machine. It has been good for my game in the fact that I can play someone better than me any time I want to....as long as I have my iphone/ipod touch etc. etc.
play against your self if need be.....say 20 darts......if you checkout 501 in less 20 darts or less then you win the leg....if you take 21 a leg to your alter ego.
What you doig tonight in around 4 hours time???? I should be on here if you fancy another game......we need a marker too lads....any volunteers?? |

:study: Do everyone you play against a big big favor, beat 'em as soundly as you are able. Let them see what really good darts can be. They marvel at great darts and respond much better to being battered by great shot after great shot than to be what might be thought of as disrespected through knowing you are throwing off. Throwing off can be seen as belittleing someone just as in spotting them points so you can beat them anyway. This is why handicapping has a nasty side to it. Trust me, old guy, keeping someone's respect is the most imortant thing. ('course if you're picking up a few bucks, that's a different thing) |

| Ah Larry, ya lucky sack! A game so good ya can't find decent competition and a woman who instead of ragging at ya for whatever is concerned for your darts game. A bloody fantasy world far as I see it. Sure you're not in Disneyworld lol So jesting aside, as well as the posted suggestions, how about getting out to some local tournaments? Try this site and if none close enough, stage one yourself. I discovered the site when looking for a stream to the PL, but have a browse thru the site m8, might be just what the Dr ordered. http://mlddarts.com/watch_live |

| If you don't seem to be able to play your best against an inferior player you might try changing what you're doing from a competition to a teaching. As was said above we lesser players (at least those of us who know we're lesser players) LOVE a good thrashing by a skilled player. But when I get stomped on like a bug by a great player, I'll outright ask them for a lesson. Show me what you've got but also tell me how you think. If you don't know the person you're playing, you might just casually mention that you've been playing for a long time and you love the competition but you also love helping out newer players (which you obviously do considering how much great advice you give here and the practice games and video and well, all that stuff). If they're smart, they'll jump on the chance. If they do that, you had better throw well or you'll embarrass yourself. See? Either way, the challenge is on. Win win and you have to show up with your best by competing against YOURSELF instead of the other player. And no matter how good you are Larry mate, you'll never beat yourself. ;) |

| Some good points there by Kevin and Mike, like Kevs idea of looking for comps so get to it Larry.
Mike makes a great point about point your self on the spot as it were while helping a lesser player, so if that dont keep ya on ya toes Larry I dont no what will! |
