Muscle memory. Has your second dart automatically followed your first dart – even if you were aiming somewhere else? That’s called muscle memory and it can be your best friend or your worst enemy, depending on when it happens. The best way to control muscle memory is to make your first dart count. Hit that first number and muscle memory does the rest. If you don’t hit the first number, step away from the line, shake it out, take a deep breath and approach the board with a new perspective.

So true.

This happens to me A LOT!!!

I'm the type of shooter that's great at following my first dart.

I also feel like I'm a great rhythm shooter. I can hit big outs by moving around to different

segments of the board. Those are my 2 strengths.

However, my weakness is when I blast my 1st dart into the 5 segment. I have a hard

time adjusting. More times then I care for I'll follow right into the 5 with next dart.

Only then will I swear to myself. Readjust and hit what I'm looking at.

The good thing is I realize my weakness, and I'm working on this problem

every time i play.

Muscle memory? 4 years ago, I made a post about muscle memory in another forum. LOL.

A couple of darting savants spoke out against muscle memory in that thread.

Hah! I remember that argument! It was a silly semantic argument... I remember someone starting it by responding to you with something along the lines of: "muscles don't have brains, how can they have memory?" As if they didn't understand the concept of a figure of speech rolling eyes

I couldn't believe that such respected and knowledgeable people in the world of darts would even go down that path!

Made for good reading for teh rest of us though!! lol!

I think where people get hung up/confused is saying to 'use muscle memory' as if it was something you 'activate'. Most regular physical activities we do employ some degree of muscle memory so in this sense it is not so much a case of having to 'use' muscle memory, but to develop it and to allow it to happen, to not interfere with letting the body do what it knows how to do.

My nooby 2 cents at least. head spin

Twice in the league i've managed to bust myself from 180 purely down to muscle memory Laughing The first two darts go into the treble and my arm just decides the third is going there too Crazy Grip (followed both of them up with sub 60 scores from memory Laughing )

Anyone who says muscle memory is a myth knows nothing about any kind of physical sport!

I think my muscles have alzheimers, I often get the first dart in the T20 and even sometimes the second dart, but the third hits the 5 or 1 No

I'm very much a beginner but already I'm beginning to notice this, though - like getagrip - if i get consistency quite often it will be my third dart that will go astray.

I think this is down to concentration going a wee bit though.

One number I where muscle memory seems non existant is 5.

Can't hit that bugger for love nor money - unless I'm going for the 20 of course! Evil or Very Mad

That's your 'brain muscle' taking over from your arm muscles ;)
