Do you weigh your darts Empty
PostSubject: Do you weigh your darts   Do you weigh your darts EmptyTue Nov 20, 2012 10:03 pm

As we have a poll on here now regarding our favourite weights i just thought I would ask 'How many of you actually weigh your darts'?

Having just completed my 14 day trial of the New Performance Darts I was surprised to find when weighing the 23g stated darts that they were only 22.75, 22.76 and 22.81 so in fact are they classed as a 22g dart?. I believe they are. For me Darts is more psychological than it is skill because if my head isn't right I struggle. Now I threw well with these darts so does that mean I should now change to a 22g dart? What about my other set stated 23g but are 23.75 23.76 and 23.81 now both sets state 23g but there is a gram difference between them so what is my weight as I was throwing equally as well with my previous 23g set that are nearer 24g. Then we have the I cant play with 24g that I have in my head as they feel too heavy for me but the Carrera's were barely over 24g which made them only a 1/4 of a gram heavier than my best or favourite weight of 23g and even I can't tell the difference in that small weight but because it says 24g I think I can. This means I can purchase 2 sets of the same darts so I have a spare set and their could be a gram difference between them which would really mess with my head as surely you can't throw the same with both? So what weight can a 23g dart legally be, what is the weight range between each g because I actually don't know what my weight is now which is why I have stated on many occasions that my set up is 'What feels right for me'

On top of all this you have the stem dilemma as the Unicorn titanium stems are 1.96g where as my harrows Quiver are 0.58g so to confuse you even more my 2 sets of the same darts can actually be 2.50g different in weight when set up which is actually quite frightening.

So do you still want to weigh your darts?

Happy shooting guys and as they say on crime-watch or darts weighing 'Don't have nightmares'

I always weigh mine and there is often discrepancies like that. I think I have only ever had a handful of darts where all 3 weighed the stated weight out of 100's of sets.

As for switching to a different weight if you play better with a set you think is your weight but is not, thats a matter only you can decided as there is so much can affect the darts feel.

I have thrown 21g darts that have felt heavier than 23g darts just depends on the shape and length of the barrels, but you know that anyway. Smile

I think thats what makes it such a difficult task for most people to be able to find a weight and dart that suits them, does not help when a dart is sold as one weight but is closer to another.

I weight my darts now because I bought a set of what I thought were 21g Hankeys years ago of ebay and swapped them on here. Fox got them and when he weighed them they were 23g. He was still happy with the darts but I didn't want to make that mistake again so I immediately bought some scales.

As for my set up, I use short aluminium stems and a standard flight so that weight will never change.

I don't weigh mine. I'm usually strong enough to pick them up and throw them at the board...

Does a tenth or hundredth of a gram make a real difference?

Ok I thought maybe. Certainly the sort of thing I could fall prey to if I let it.

I am stuck blaming my crappy throws for my misfortunes.

That being said, I do believe that one should find a dart that feels comfortable. Not the 'perfect' dart per se, but
maybe one that just feels nice in the hand ..possibly even slightly invisible.

That's just me though I suppose.

Good topic.

It's always bugged me when you ask someone what their dart weighs and they just give you the barrel weight. Nowadays with options to change to a variety of points, stems, flights, etc... 2 players playing with the same exact barrel might have darts that weigh up to 2 or 3 grams apart. That's why I think it's important to weigh the entire dart. After all, you don't just throw the barrel at the board.
Usually when I post pics of new darts I include the total dart weight as well.

But overall I'm personally not concerned about weight. 1/2 the time I play soft tip and that dart is around 14.5 grams where as my steel tip dart is 16 grams. We have a couple tournaments here that are held outdoors and I'll grab my ole standby dart for that one. A 20 gram (total weight) dart. Doesn't bother me the slightest. Whatever feels good.
