Rotty, there is a big difference between trying darts and playing with them. I've seen many times someone throw a dart a few times, then buy them to realize there is a significant difference between giving them a try and actually playing with them. Some call this the honeymoon period.

23g to 26g is a pretty large jump in weight.

McCoys are inexpensive darts.
Phil Taylor uses 26gm and has seemed to have done quite well. I suggest try them and if ya don't get on with them sell them here. 14.49 gbp is a steal for these darts.

a 3g increase is nothing significant in my opinion but its always an idea to get a cheap set or even borrow a set to see how they work over a week or two. Ive found moving up in weight no problems at all however going back down was an issue and didn't work for me but that could just be my throw and my style.

I went from 18g Unicorn Colin Lloyd darts to 26g Phase 5 darts with great success but i tried moving back down to 24g which just didn't work and i tried over 20 sets in 24g but nothing worked so i went back to 26g phase 5 and wish i never tried going down.

The reason i tried going down in weight was simply i thought a smaller / thinner dart would allow better grouping and at times the phase 5 blocks the bed a lot because they are so thick so i learned a big lesson to not over think things.

i had a set of phase 5 i like the feel of them and felt comtable in the hand but must the design of dart didnt suit my throwing stye 18g to 26g up 8g wow thats a big jump i find with heavier dart easyer to throw with less effort but may look at slender barrel then phase 5 might be what im looking for i purchased a set of wes newtons online 26g see how i go look forward to trying them

Have you ever tried a lighter dart for any period of time?

The first darts I had were 21g. I had a hard time throwing them. When I shifted to 26g, I felt I gained better control but easily got tired throwing. My current dart weight is 25g. But of course, everything boils down to practice. Very Happy

Did you guys use different flights when you went lighter.

Next time you get a chance to throw something light, slap a set of slim flights on there.

Makes a world of difference.

In my case, I didn't experiment much on the flights when I was using 21g. Now I know I should have.

I currently use non-standard flights on my heavy darts (slims, pears and sigma pro).

Ive just been through the same situation. I use to throw 22's then a mate came over and left his 26's around for a couple O weeks (they are both long skinny barrel's). Of coarse I picked them up and they felt realy comfortabe to throw. As you stated above you need alot less effort to get to the board due to inertia. when he took them back i quickly went a brought a cheap set of pumas from rebel sport think they cost $24au to fill the void cuz It is hard to go back down. I seem to be able to feel the weight of the dart as I throw it easy'r than a light dart. For my style of throw it seems that the longer the barrel and heavyer the dart the flatter the final lie. As said above I would borrow or bye a cheap set and use it for a couple O weeks to see how you get on. Dont be afraid of trying all weights for a year or so till you find that perfect weight for your throw. Then stick with it when you find it. I am under the impression (i might be wrong) that a harder thrower can use a lighter dart and a softer thrower can use a heavier one, there will be a certain weight for the natural curb, thrust and wobble of an individuals throw to get the dart to the board at the correct angle (Im talking mainly left and right but also up and down aswell). And as Winnmau said FLIGHTS can change things dramaticly a smaller flight will speed the dart up and flatten the arc and works well with lighter darts, I find that it flattens the final lie for my style of throw aswell.

Any how I tried a few different weights and styles and always go back to those cheap 26's they just feel right FOR ME. In saying all this there is no right or wrong becuse there is so many variables its not funny grip, wrist flick, spin, kick, wobble pace, arc, how far you lean into your throw, setup of dart, ect ect. Everyone is different and only through experimenting will you find your right arrow and I think you should take your time with this process cuz when you find it you stick with it but there is no joy in sticking with something that is not right for you just for the sake of sticking with it. <-------did that last bit make sence ?

LARRY:
I like those Mcoys the bullnose is so sexy and the grip looks quite grippy.
I realy like the look of the Target sports extreem 26g and have to get some oneday.

JD:
Go push your light darts somewere else you light dart junkie lol!

Jokes, after watching some of your performances I am seriously guna get a cheap set O lightys and have a go just for you. Will just have to get you to throw them for me then Id be a sit hot dart player. Laughing

Hey guys on the topic of heavy darts, I was recently looking on DC to see the prices on a new board, and was of course checking out the darts, and was thinking that I have never seen anyone throw the REALLY heavy ones....Like 40/42g....just was interested if any of you have tried them as it would seem like throwing a rock to me. I use 23g and have tried 26g and they seemed very heavy to me. I cannot imagine how a 40g + dart would feel....

Never try'd any O but I would love to get some for my mate (big steve) who doesnt own a set and when he comes around it's like (imagine deep voice) "have you got any thing heaver these are too light". now imagine hulk "puny darts". Think they would suite him down to a tee and might get a good game out of him finaly, but my poor dartboard!!!!

Yes, I imagine it would be so difficult. Hmm...I am visiting the UK in December to attend my first Darts Exhibition, maybe I will pick up a cheap set, just to experience it!

Yes G, was thinking of putting a post on nearer the time if anyone will be in the Wrexham area of the UK for a game, or London as I am spending a few days there after the exhibition. Still, either way really hoping to get a game against Wez Newton at the exhibition, as I'm traveling 3000km for it, think the owner of the bar will put a word in for me Very Happy
