PostSubject: My Captain and I disagree big time.   My Captain and I disagree big time. EmptyFri Oct 26, 2012 7:26 am

Was practicing today with my Captain and we started talking about taking out the number 41. I said 9 db16 is my choice . He saying go for one of the numbers at the bottom of the board and will always leave you 2 darts at an out. Well I don't like it because 3 leaves db19 and if you hit the big 19 your screwed, hit 19 leaves db11 same scenario, hit 17 a little better with db 12. Anyway it got to the point and said ok we both have 41 you use your system and I will use mine. I closed out every time with less darts. Then the comment that our team is poor players and would have more of a chance his way. Once again I disagreed because IMO your teaching them the wrong way. What say you? BTW my Captain is a great guy.

Single one, double top for me every time! I can see the idea behind his thinking though, weaker players, nervous players etc might be better going that way to ensure a throw at double

Tell that captain to watch ANY PDC matches on Youtube and see how they go.

99.9% of the players will go 9, D-16 OR 1, tops.

Period.

it's about personal preference but s9 d16 or s1 d20, or s5 d18 will all give you 2 darts at double if you hit with your 1st dart

yeah I go single 1 double top also at times. But the bottom of the board IMO is not the way to go even with new nervous players. I just believe doing it correctly from the get go is best.

Absolutely. If you're going to learn something, might as well do it right from the get go.

Next time you see the captain, give him one of these from ME.

thats what hes saying but weaker players shooting at a more difficult double IMO is not the way to go. Especially if they are my partner lol

I agree with you Larry - 9 - D16 always for me! 1 - D20 is not a safe shot imo. I only hit single ones when I'm throwing at 20's!!

It has to be what gives your the best chance of taking it out. Best way to go is S9/D16 or S1/D20!

I'm going to agree with your captain, but only for new players.

If you are so inaccurate that while throwing at S3 you hit 19 or 7 (which actually probably means you hit treble/double occasionally too!) more than about 3 times in 10, the math of getting at least one shot a double (and possibly two) makes more sense by going at the area.

If you miss S9 or S1 by the same margin of error, for example, you hit an even number, which means you then MUST hit a single, odd number, on your next dart to get even 1 at the double.

If you're hitting 8/10 consistently on any single (or better) go for the 9/D16. Less than that... play the odds until you get to be a better player.

Think about it from the other side too: if you can't hit a single number, basically on demand, does it really matter which double you're shooting at? You're only going to hit it by luck anyway, so why not give yourself a chance to get lucky as soon as possible?

You want me to send some stink over and sort him out?

Not sure if it will get through customs though!

I see your point Chalk. But why would you teach someone the "wrong" way to play darts?
At what point would you tell the person "Hey, I see you're playing better, this is how you REALLY play".

I'm all for teaching a person the correct way to go, and if they put in the practice it will eventually pay off.

It's hard enough to learn the out shots as a beginner, I don't see why you would tell him other was to go. Might confuse the poor guy.

Dtops is okay. I have trouble reaching it and dont like the way it breaks.

My preference is d16. Breaks real nice. Hit big 16 and you can go for double eight. Hit single eight and you can go for d12. hit d8 and you can go for d8, etc , etc.

D16 is one of the easier numbers to shoot for with practice anyways least for me. I have alot more dominance over the bottom half of the board than the top anyways.

Don't see why any one would be trying to break on odd numbers like your captain. Terrible strategy.

If you want to play the percentages, then that group of 4 odd numbers isnt a bad option. But I think they should be taught the pro way of going out which is the s9/d16 or the s1/d20.

The other option would be to tell them to go for what they feel comfortable in hitting.

And to add fuel to the fire , if playing partners I don't wanna be shooting at a odd numbered out to be honest.

Agree with that one Sabre. In doubles, you have to consider your partner.

My only exception to that is if I'm playing mixed doubles and my partner isn't very good, then you take whatever they can leave you. lol

In this situation - I do agree with Larry. New players should learn the proper set ups. But I remember being a newbie and say liked finishing with a double 14. Maybe it was a hunch but a lot of times I took out the "wrong" double. So from that regard, if a person wants to go a certain way because they are more comfortable, I say go for it. Of course when they miss, I swat them on the head and say "why'd ya do that?". Just my two cents Larry. I hear ya but I agree more with The Chalkman of the Board!!

Funny, I was watching a league game (not playing) and a guy had 48 left. Guess where he shot? Went for a 20 - and he's been in the league for a few years. That would drive me nuts if he was on my team!

I see alot of players doing similar. They have played for years yet still dont think about what they are shooting at.

It has not been brought up, but I would also point out to your captain that if you are dealing with players who are less accurate and have a larger margin of error, then you are also bringing in two bust segments on the T19 and the T17. By going the S9, D16 route the only number that they would really bust on is T14.

S17, still leaves a double that can be broken down a few times though, so you were a little off on your original post...D12, D6, D3. I'm with you though, my vote is S9, double 16. Add to the fact that if you hit S16, the D8 is right there so you're not making a player move around the board which can be uncomfortable at times for a newbie.

S1-Tops is valid, but since S9, D16 is a smart way to take it out that would most likely give the most chance of success I'd go that route with my teammates.

1 or 9 for me allways go for a double that breaks down if missed i know 9-d16 is my prefered way as breaks down all the way to d1
1 d20 if missed then d-10 if missed d-5 if missed trouble

yeah ya right on the 17's buddy was so against the bottom of the board because of so many bad things can happen I over looked it. Good catch ! Still single 9 the way to go IMO.

Wow I can't believe your captains thought process here I do understand that any shot at a double is better than no shot at all that is common sense but on 41 with 3 darts you go the way to leave the shot you think you will hit or to leave your favourite double. A lot players would be laughed off the oche going 3 d19 or 7 d17 for 41 as it's just plain WRONG. It is just the wrong way to learn and play the game. I know we are not all top Pro's but most players who play in a team should be able to hit a single number although the pressure can get to us all at times and you don't leave a shot from 41 lol.
Generally though if your playing in a team you should be able to do the basics and I believe that to be hitting a few 20's the odd treble and having a shot at a double from 41 to 60 with 3 darts in your hand.
I have in the past gone 3 D3 but that's just to take the micky out of a mate when we are all having a laugh. It is also about confidence so practice the right way and be confident in your shots out as they are more important than the 180's trust me, remember you don't win a game hitting the trebles.

Too right Silver why learn it wrong to have to re learn it right later it doesn't make any sense to me and 99% of the darts playing community cant be wrong surely? The only time I have ever said go for an odd one was when a blind deaf one armed man was having a throw in my local and he was drunk and using some rusty old nails as darts and he was on 41 having busted it 43 times by hitting the treble 20 over and over again so I said to him 'Just hit an odd one for goodness sake cos your opponent is now down to 170' so he went for it and hit a 3 but missed the d19 only for his mate to take out the 170 only using his feet as he was in a worse state that the first fella. I don't drink in there no more though as not to keen on the beer, Carling you see lol, had some good nights though, I am starting to make myself laugh now so got to stop ha ha.
