| I have just purchased my new dart board a Phil Taylor unicorn PDC board and cabinet with 2 sets of darts(don't like the darts there crap) £24.99 at Argos. I have sent for some 23g amberjacks from Red Dragon. While browsing through i seen the specialist boards :- wide 5, narrow five, yorkshire and lincon. Can anyone please explain ? I figured out myself you throw darts at them. |

| Yeah thats right, before the game was standardised and everyone started to use the London/Clock board there was different boards used throughout England. I think Manchester still have a log end league but I think all the others may have died out now.
Not sure if there was any specific boards used in Scotland, Wales and Ireland though. |

| Thats the Indoor League clip I think he meant. They used to use the Yorkshire board on it but I think later on the switched to the normal board or London board. Read this: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]and also subscribe to Patricks Newsletter. |

| You don't need any of them they are all just boards used in different areas but to be honest I don't think they are still used much. The only board I would suggest as become a better player is the Trainer board with half size Doubles and Trebles as it helps with your focus and concentration but other than that stick to the traditional board for now. those dart rings endorsed by Eric Bristow look good too, shame I didn't market those when I had the idea some 10 odd years ago as they are making him a few bob now. |

Not sure if there was any specific boards used in Scotland, Wales and Ireland though. I used to play in the log end league a long time ago, and I loved it. the board is cut from the trunk of an elm tree, is dyed black, and you have to soak it in a bucket of water when not being used. I think some places still use them, but they are not the originals. The original and proper 'elm' boards are made by a company in Manchester called Perrigo. It is a family run business and log end boards were part of their heritage. However, some years ago, they stopped making the boards because, the raw materials (elm) was not easy to come by and was no longer financially viable. There was no other suitable material that gave the same quality board, so they made a decision to stop making them. However, another guy went into business making them from another material (apparently not very good, and the darts do not hold), and even had an article in the biggest newspaper in Manchester talking about how he had bough the log end business from Perrigo (which he had not). This was a bit of an insult to the family that mader the originals, who had made a decision based upon quality, but somebody else was making inferior quality boards, stating that they had bought the business from them and were charging more than double for them. Shame really, but unfortunatley, if anybody tells you that they play log end, then unless they have a board that is well over a dcade old, then they do not play proper log end! |

| It was not just the Manchester log end boards that used Elm either, they used Elm a lot in the 70's but Dutch Elm disease put paid to that and also the introduction of the new bristle boards. |

| I was talking to a guy who is from a village not far from Whitby, and he was telling me they still use the Yorkshire board in the local pub. Tradition still endures for some. I read about the log boards on a site grippa pointed me to (link above), it was an interesting read. |
