Pretty much any dart forum always has this topic. There's always a lot of debate on which way to go. Do you shoot at the 20's and try and leave yourself a look at tops. Or do you go the 16's route for a look at 32 or 16? I did a little test tonight and took 5 rounds going each way. Didn't really prove a damn thing as I got a look at a double 10 out of the 10 times. All we can ask for, at the bare minimum, is to at least get a shot at a double. My preference will always be going 20's, as the double 20 is bigger then the bullseye, and I don't have to be pressured into hitting triple. But as the video shows. I at least got a look at a double going either way. Was slightly more successful going 20's though. Let's here how you guys go. There really is NO wrong way as long as you get a chance to finish the game.

I think a very large majority of people would opt for the 20 route. Although I`m no stranger to going the 16s route if my opponent is lagging behind on 200 odd. If my life depended on hitting a double it would be 16 so that`s why I`ll occasionally go the 16 route, but if my opponent is on any 3 dart finish then I`ll go the 20`s route.
I have done it. But prefer the single 20,single 19 tops approach really. Easier to hit the singles for me then the trip 13.

i always went the 16's route when i was practicing, but when I started playing out and was in a doubles match I went the 16's route and left 16's for my team mate. he moaned his tits off after he missed it, so the team all got involved and they moaned there tits off. Since then if im playing for team I go 20's, if im on my own in rileys I go 16's which I prefer and generally get

I ALWAYS go the 16 route. My reasoning being, I have been throwing at the T20 so long in the match, S20,S20, D20 always seems to turn into S20,T20... me losing because of a bust. When I was first truly learning outs, a fellow here told me "Never throw at a single if the trip of that number can bust you" (and ever since my teammates thought I was weird for shooting D20, D10 when I have 60 left). If you throw at the T16 and only hit a single then throw for the wire between T16 and T8, a T16 leaves you D8, working in the same region, and a T8 leaves you double top. If you miss and hit the single again, sure you are left to hope the other player misses and you get another chance, but I always view my first dart as a "stroke" dart, and warm up for the trip to follow. All in all, it is what you are more comfortable with. When I step up I am 100% confident that I will be throwing at a double on my third dart if I am aiming at the 16, I am also pretty confident if I throw the 20 I will either bust, or hit a 1 or 5. A bit of a self fulfilling prophecy I suppose

20s every time! Far rather have one dart at tops than one dart at bull

Going 16's with 80 left is sort of like going 13's with 79 left for me I suppose???
I like tops. My preferred route.
With that being said, wouldn't it be foolish to go 13's??
Depends if my opponent is on a finish or not and how well (and confident) im playing!

You could say its all about getting a shot at the double as thats the only way you win the game, no shot = no win it's that simple. However it's also about your confidence. We had this discusiion a few weeks ago and if you are confident and your darts are going in to be honest you could go T10 Bull and hit it 8 out of 10 times. I always say i you have the luxury of a choice choose your favourite or most confident way eg oponent way back on 230 if not go the route that gives you the best chance of a shot at a double and any double at that because they are all the same size and if you hit it it's the game winner. Sometimes players get hooked up on stats and looking pretty I am about beating the opponent in front of me and if I have to do that by finishing on dodgy doubles like 19's or 13's then so be it cos when I beat you your OUT and i'm in the next round.
Every double is a winning shot so take your opportunity when you get it. Practice them all cos you need them all.

I tend to play the percentages. I want a shot at a double in those 3 darts, so I will go the way that is easiest. This will be the way that does not require a treble where possible.

Tops isn't my favourite double so I'd most likely go the 16's route

I'm like you Mac, tops is not a fav of mine, but I still go 20's. I look for the t20 to leave d10. I still manage to ping the odd d20. lol
