Darts Shelf DIY Project Empty
PostSubject: Darts Shelf DIY Project    Darts Shelf DIY Project EmptyTue Aug 21, 2012 12:24 am

I'm fairly into DIY (used to be a mechanical Engineer so always been pretty happy working with my hands designing and fabricating).

Having built up a nice collection of collectable vintage darts, I've been wanting somewhere to display them in my darts room.
I was watching a nice little unit on Ebay that ended up going for a lot more than I thought it would (£88 !!)

In the end I thought why not build my own bespoke one, that way I can make it exactly as I need it.

Got the wood (pine/softwood) for £17 from a local timber merchant, the little plastic shelf studs were a couple of pounds about £6 for the wood stain and sandpaper (so under £30 for the lot).

Its about a meter wide and over half a meter tall (900mm x 600mm), the bottom shelf has a bigger gap on purpose for the eagle eyed (I have darts in cases that will line up on there and need the clearance.

Here are some pics -

Note the sun is out !!!

Had to stop here to go out for a couple of beers and enjoy the sunshine !!

Nearly all built here - (just needs the back cutting a fixing on)

All built and 1 coat of Medium Oak stain brushed on -

Took probably about 4 hours to build (pretty happy with that as i haven't ever built anything like this before.
made a couple of little errors so will know better next time.

Thinking of adding a perspex front so I don't have to dust !!

Very nice - I doubt I could get anything close to resembling that if I had 44 hours lol. Even my flat pack efforts don't come out looking that good!!

Thanks again lads, was really happy how it turned out, really enjoyed making it, the only other woodwork i have done was a fence (which you can see in the 1st pic, that was made for free as i pinched some old pallets from work that were going in the skip... that also turned out well) the other time was when i tried to hang a door... that really went bad ... but did make great fire wood lol

Looks good all set up like that - great job, and nice little collection you have there. The Silver Comets - are they originals or the new release?

Thanks BigShow,

The boxes on the top right have a couple of set of brass darts in them, I got them off the pub landlord about 5 years ago, they are ale and beer branded promo sets.

Thanks MC, yep those are originals, the box has the shop name on them (cant actually remember off the top of my head what it says now..., will have a look later on).
Wanted to get a nice set as I knew that they were making them again

Jack Hoods from 1930(ish), they have "Jack Hood" stamped into them, they are really odd, I haven't got a clue what they are made out off and it looks like they have been attacked with an angle grinder, I doub't they were made and sold like that, maybe someone just wanted more grip and attacked them ?!?

They were from ebay, got them for about a £28 I think which wasn't too bad really, think old Jack won one of the very early news of the world comps so a nice bit of history.

The set on the left of them are really nice, and I think they are actually a set of these - http://www.dartsnutz.com/t20-jack-hood-darts

So I think the ones in grips post possibly might be in the wrong box as the ones I have come in the original box which has "torpal Darts" on the front (found this info on them - http://worldwide.espacenet.com/publicationDetails/biblio?CC=GB&NR=526321&KC=&FT=E&locale=en_EP)

Looks great Stuart!

Nice collection too!

I seen those Brass Jack Hoods darts but was not sure at the time if they were genuine as they were different to the ones I had. But I seen some other Hoods that were the same as the ones I had too, so its a mystery to me what is the right ones?

Could be that the Torpal ones were re branded as Jack Hoods I dont really know?

Thanks grip.

That interesting about the darts, may well have been re-branded if jack was using them.
The torpal ones i have are in 100% good condition, well pleased to have picked up a set a while ago.

The ones the have "jack hood" on them are really odd, there are not brass and they are not tungsten, they are pretty light, cant think what they could be, they really have an aged look and feel to them, would love to know more about them
