Custom Darts- My Design. Thoughts? Empty
PostSubject: Custom Darts- My Design. Thoughts?   Custom Darts- My Design. Thoughts? EmptySun Feb 10, 2013 9:42 am

Hi All,

I am thinking of getting some Custom Darts made, based on my Darts Performance Centre 25g Darts but just with more grip (as I am finding them too low).

Here is my Grip, which I have tried to make them suit :

Here is my design :

Original Dart :

What do you think? Are there any possible issues that you can think of?

Many Thanks,

James

Great idea, only issue may be the smoothing as it would obviously have to be ground down to the deepest pit, which may make the dart too thin to mee the point/shaft?

You may end up with a lip.

Thanks Rebel.

What I should of said though was that I was going to get a new set made, not them modified- they are just based on the same shape as my normal ones.

Although Modifying my original set is a good idea, it will lose too much weight I think unfortunately...

Thanks,

James

Ah right, yeah, then in that case James, think they are a great design and will look fantastic, obviously you have put a lot of thought and effort into it.

You will have to show us a pic if/when you get them made. Very Happy

Thanks again Rebel Smile

I am hoping to get them done, I am currently just waiting for a reply from Elven to see if he thinks he can make what I want - and then I'll go from there Smile

Thanks,

James

You custom design looks good.
As you will have the high level elite grip on the barrel where you only need it, where your thumb and index finger will be positioned .
Also think the elite grip is one of the best grip designs out.
I also like the idea of the large groove at the front, so your middle finger can sit on it. This will ensure the dart is positioned correctly in your grip.
Think Eddie at Elven will be able to make this.

Thank you Smile

That was the whole idea mainly - only having grip where I hold the dart which should allow consistent grip placement.

The groove at the front was the one thing I was unsure about :

I only rest my finger on it, so there is very little pressure on the dart. Now I thought about putting the Elite grip there but I thought it would wreck/damage flights a lot due to the aggressive grip and the placement of it - So I had to come up with something else. I also thought about some shallow grooves but I realised that I wouldn't be able to feel them.

This is the only thing that I could think of which will (hopefully) allow my finger tip feel it but not aggressive enough to damage flights.

I would be interested to know any other ideas people have as I am still unsure whether I will be able to feel it...!

Thanks,

James

I wouldn't worry too much about damaging flights.

I would always put a quality preferred grip above any damage to flights, they are easily replaced and relatively cheap, whereas your dart-grip-game ratio is not.

I am considering buying a set of Barney Saw Tooth darts, will wreck flights but as long and they feel right I know I can easily replace flights.

As a rule I use new flights for match night then use the same set for practice all week and change again for the following match, any that are still in good shape go in me spares box for weeks where a particular flight or 2 get demolished (not so much these days) and are unusable for practice.

Just my opinion Very Happy

That's a good point Rebel! Smile

Thinking about it though, I think I will keep just the groove...

My reason for this is although I will be able to feel the Elite Grip a lot more/better I think that could lead to a possible bad affect as I would constantly be checking to make sure my finger is resting on the grip...which I think would be a bad thing as it brings subconscious thoughts into it which isn't really wanted...

I will still have another think about it though Smile

Thanks,

James

Best thing I can recommend is just what you said in your last post. "I will still have another think about it though" Take your time figuring out what you want.
I had a set of customs made and I rushed things a bit. As a result they didn't come out exactly as I wanted. So just take your time, double and triple check everything you want. But going with Eddie is a great choice.
Look forward to seeing the final product.

Good Luck

looks great. have you thought about extending the flight divider further back? any idea where the CoG is exactly? bit tough to calculate on paper w/ the various materials.

Thats the thing I always wonder when coming up with a design, where is the balance point, also will the design fit the weight you want, I dont know if the designers who work for the manufacturers have a formula for working that out or if they just go by trialand error.

I know the barrel can be machined out from the inside, but the more that gets taken out the more it affects the centre of gravity.

I like your ideas on that design though James, you have given it some thought, if your sure the grip points are placed right for where you hold it then go for it.

Nice one! good job

an adjustable center of gravity would be a nice finishing touch for such a great looking dart.

hollowed out barrel w/ a piston adjusted to a depth of your liking.

There was a dart out in the 80's that had an adjustable core. I have only ever seen adverts of it but would love to have had a set for my collection. Guess it never took off.

a lot of tuning options can be a horrible thing. the only way it's beneficial is when you have a team logging all the throw data into computers making the changes for you. kinda like motogp, or a golfer and his caddy.

i've learned it's best to keep such nonsense away. cuz if it's there, and available.. you will mess with it. a lot.
