PostSubject: Week 1   Week 1 EmptyWed Feb 06, 2013 10:30 am

evening folks, thought i'd give an update after my first week with the arrows.

i think i've made some progress, not too much of course, but i seem to get round the clock a bit better and my grouping is often better.

i'm enjoying it though, and it's a great way to unwind from work, although i'm competitive with myself and so often struggle to put the darts down once i get going!!

what i've found difficult though is learning where to stand, how to grip the dart, how to throw it etc...

i've read loads of information about it, and also read on here that to begin with you should just through what comes naturally and then after a while you can adjust. i suppose for me i just wanted to try not to get in to bad habits right from the start.

been trying to concentrate on following through on the throw, and this has helped, but i seem to be throwing a lot to the right at the moment.

don't know if it's a dodgy grip or just lack of practise or something else. i've got shovels for hands (see picture!) which might be part of the problem!!

anyway, if anyone wants to offer advice, give me some suggestions then feel free.

enjoying the darts and the forum.

cheers

No#1 - keep enjoying yourself!!

It'll take a while to find your best grip, oche position etc but try not to over think it mate. Also, try to vary your practice (check out our beginners section and give flight school a look if you haven't already)....and remember, miricles won't happen overnight but keep plugging away and you will start to notice improvements in no time.

Yeah enjoying it is the best part, its always difficult not to over think every little detail. If you let it darts can be broken down into so many minute details that if you think about each thing too much it ruins your game.

For stance I personally think you should stand in as comfortable a way as possible, and keep your stance steady. Dont over balance by leaning too far forward. Most of your weight should be on your front foot and preferably your back foot should stay on the floor throughout but it is fine to be on the balls of your foot on the backfoot, front foot should stay flat.

I stand with my right front foot at a 45 degree angle, my back foot is about 1 1/2 feet away and about 10 inches to the left of my front foot. Its just the stance I find natural, its not something I have forced my self to do. I dont lean much but thats more because it hurts my right knee putting too much weight on it.

Some player stand with their front foot parallel to the oche and in a side on stance like Taylor. Its just a case of finding what you feel most comfortable with.

Where abouts on the oche you stand is something you can experiment with. Try different positions and throw at different areas of the board to see what happens.

I prefer to stand as central as possible, but I make sure my shoulder is in line with the middle of the board.

Don't let anyone tell you how to throw, the speed between each dart, grip or where to stand. I've been told that from day 1 and its paying off Smile
Just keep playing and it'll come :-) noones a better teacher than the person themselves.

Thanks lads. The advice seems very different from something like golf where there is more of a right and wrong way to do things.

I'll keep plugging away, although I may need to rotate my board already as the 1 has had a hell of a beating! Laughing
